Gypsies and Healthcare
|
Older relatives play a large role in decision making for the family. It is important to take this into account when you are explaining a procedure. They may also help to keep younger children cooperative.
Gypsies are a very eccentric group of people. Their moods and emotions can alternate quickly, so it’s important to keep calm and do everything in your power to keep them cooperative. Medical personnel should keep in mind that English is a second language to gypsies. It’s important to read important information to them. Also, they should be asked if anything that was discussed may be against their religion. If they refuse any kind of care, it’s important to explain to them why it would be beneficial to have it done. There is a large portion of gypsies that cannot read, but do not assume that means gypsies are less intelligent. Gypsy patients are more willing to undergo emergency procedures rather than having to plan ahead for a procedure that’s scheduled. It’s very important that medical personnel explain to gypsy patient’s what the association between smoking, drinking, unprotected sex, and diets high in animal fat and the health problems that can be caused from it. Once you realize that you have a gypsy patient, you must understand that family is extremely important. They do not like being alone and having some relatives in the room may keep their emotional overload under control.
